Our Club was again an active supporter of the annual Bowelscan campaign in March 2008. Here’s the final report from the campaign committee: We have received the last figures for Bowelscan 2008 and the results I believe are quite impressive. Sales: 7394 kits; Returned: 4002 kits; Return ratio 54%.
Results: Male 1809; Female 2153; Unknown 40. Positive results: 26. Altogether, 43 Rotary clubs from all over the three WA Districts supported the program. And 151 pharmacies participated. We have again come to the conclusion of another year of our involvement with the Rotary Bowelscan project with the great assistance of Western Diagnostic Pathology and its managing director, Peter Boyne. Two participants have not attended their GP since notification of a positive result, and we have encouraged the medical centres concerned to attempt to contact the patients again. Of the remaining 24 positive participants, some are yet to have their procedures due to the long waiting list for a colonoscopy. I am also still awaiting information from some GPs regarding results following procedures. Of the participants who have had follow up investigations, five were noted to have common ailments including polyps, haemorrhoids and diverticulitis. However, four participants were found to have more serious conditions including colorectal cancer, rectal cancer, a tumour in the ascending colon and neoplasia, which have all resulted in further treatment and surgery. Our aim in attracting Kalgoorlie, Albany and Geraldton into the program in 2008 was successful. We should be able to build on this with other country clubs. All country clubs in 9470 participated this year. Expansion is only limited by the number of Rotary clubs participating.

As part of this year’s program, $24,510 was spent on commercial marketing of Bowelscan principally on radio. Ad agency Marketforce, which donated its services, reports that “bonus” (free) coverage on television, radio, press and online media was valued at nearly $80,000. |
