Last week’s tragic tsunami in the Solomon Islands is proving another demonstration of the value of Rotary’s unique disaster relief shelter boxes. An initial consignment of 200 ShelterBoxes, each containing a 10-person tent and survival equipment, is being flown to the Solomon Islands via Brisbane.
It’s a long journey for the ShelterBoxes – they’re coming from the United Kingdom to Brisbane before being transferred to a flight to Honiara. From there they will go by ship the last 200 miles to the remote island of Gizo, where more than 20 people were killed and about 5000 left homeless by waves up to 10m high that followed an earthquake.
The Solomon Islands tragedy has stretched the resources. Six hundred boxes were recently sent to flooding victims in Honiara.
ShelterBox Australia says the boxes have so far provided shelter for nearly 500,000 people in some 30 countries. Each ShelterBox is worth $1200, which includes the cost of all materials, packing, storage, transport worldwide and distribution as well as usual overheads.
Donations can be made to ShelterBox Australia at PO Box 790, Endeavour Hills Vic 3802.
