Shelterboxes are usually packed with one (sometimes two) ten-person tent(s) (200 sq ft). Other items can include insulated sleeping mats and bags, thermal blankets, water purification tablets, water containers/carriers, a trenching shovel, rope, a hachet, a jack-knife, a screwdriver, a hammer, a multi-fueled cook stove, eating utensils and plates, and a childrens' activity kit.
Once upon a time, Tom Henderson attended a regular Helston-Lizard Rotary Club meeting. What he said next was to change everything.
Tom Henderson 'Hey guys, I've had an idea, which could bring shelter and beds to people who have become homeless in disasters around the world... and all in a single box'. 'Yeah, that sounds a good idea' we said, 'why don't you look into it'?
Well, Tom doesn't need to be told twice.? As an ex naval officer and spending his time generally doing dangerous stuff above and below the sea all over the globe, he went and found all that was needed... tents, sleeping bags, boxes, equipment - the best quality, (with some arm twisting) at the lowest cost.
He put SHELTERBOX together, it's administered by the Helston-Lizard Club and sent worldwide through Rotary.
The ShelterBox Australia project is administered through the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills (VIC). It is distributed through Aid Agencies and Rotary Clubs closest to the disaster areas. Most of the funding comes as donations from Rotary Clubs around the world, as well as other organizations and individuals who have given great support to the project. But continuity is the key for the future and funding is constantly being sought.
The cost of a complete Shelter Box is $1200.00 AUD. The boxes and new equipment are purchased as donations are received. All amounts are welcome and are used to purchase items toward a complete box. Best value is achieved by working closely with leading manufacturers, all items being obtained at less than trade prices!
