Rotary Books for Bubs, a program launched in 2008 by the Rotary Club of Booragoon, helps open children up to the magic of books by encouraging their parents to read to them from a very young age.
Over 75% of a child’s brain development occurs within the first three years of life. Infants who miss out on the shared enjoyment of books in their first months can often face serious disadvantage in later years.
The process starts as young as four months of age. Educational research indicates children who do not develop literacy skills by school age may never catch up with their peers.
While many libraries run child literacy programs, the families at greatest disadvantage are least likely to frequent libraries. Books for Bubs works at a very local level by building links between the child’s parents and the school.
Participating schools invite the parents of new children in their catchment area to an assembly at which they are presented with a Books for Bubs kit.
In the kit are picture and bath-time books, a book for the parents on the value of reading aloud and a T-shirt that says: “I’m a Book for Bubs kid – please read to me”.
