Members will recall the delightful young Juliana Cabral, who came from a strife-torn part of East Timor to Perth last year for life-saving surgery under ROMAC, the Rotary Overseas Medial Aid for Children program.
When she arrived in Perth, Juliana (or “Ansa” as she is known to family and friends) was given six weeks to live because of a hole in the heart.

The following message to President Russell comes from Danielle Coloper, deputy principal of East Hamilton Hill Primary School. Russell attended assembly at the school a couple of weeks ago to present a cheque for $500 to support the innovative Books for Bubs program run by Jo Sterkenburg. “Thank you for attending our assembly last week and being part of the Books for Bubs presentation. We really appreciate the generous support from the Rotary Club of Booragoon, as it enables us to continue with a fantastic community and school program.“ |

From its first days, the Club has played a significant role in supporting young people. The Endeavour Scholarship is a program unique to the Club. Each year, the Club provides financial support to help meet the educational costs of a number of students who because of family or financial circumstances might otherwise be unable to continue with their high school education. Rotary youth programs also supported are
- Rotary Youth Exchange Program
- Rotary Youth Leadership Awards
- Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment
- Leeuwin Leadership Program
- National Youth Science Forum and Siemens Science Experience
The annual Handicamp provides a week-long active residential program for young people with physical handicaps. The Club regularly sponsors the attendance of campers and volunteer carers for the event. The Club has taken an active role in supporting literacy programs. Local causes regularly supported include the Murdoch Community Hospice, Salvation Army youth programs and Mission Australia. |

When Juliana Cabral arrived in Perth seven weeks ago, she had been given less than six months to live. An attack of rheumatic fever she suffered at the age of six had left her with a hole in the heart that was progressively worsening.
